About Our Library

The citizens of the Town of Rollinsford first petitioned for a public library in 1840. For 167 years townspeople voted in favor of, and worked toward the goal of having our own free public library. Rollinsford is a small town located on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. The town has one of the best preserved mill villages in New England. The village is surrounded by hundreds of acres of farmland much of which is conserved in easement. The town is situated on the western bank of the Salmon Falls River which divides New Hampshire from Maine.

In 2007, the owners of the mill complex generously offered a space in the historic Lower Mill for the library’s new home. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of many devoted volunteers, and the donations of furnishings, books and many of the services needed to get the library up and running. More than 70 people have given thousands of hours of their time creatively renovating the space into a library. They have cataloged and covered the books, solicited donations, delivered furniture and shelving, and inspired people to donate skilled labor. The library, open since June 1, 2008, now boasts a collection of over 10,000 items and participates in the state library system offering computer services, access to state databases, and cultural and social events and activities. Hundreds of people from town use the library each month.

The creation of the library has truly been a grassroots effort. Rollinsford should be proud of the people who spearheaded this and of the community support that has made it possible. The library still relies on private donations for about one half of its operating budget.

The Friends of the Library and the Board of Trustees look for unique and interesting ways to raise funds including our new calendar project. The calendar will feature our most dedicated library supporters (willing to be nude for the cause) posing with their favorite book somewhere in town. It is a cheeky but tasteful, fun and surprising! Thanks in advance for your support!
